A Media Day earlier this month with two of our newest Ambassadors, Dom Cunningham (Team GB gymnast) and Zoe Davison (Modern Pentathlon) was a great experience for me. Journalists from both ‘The Sun’ and ‘BBC World Service’ met up with us at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire. As the founder of Sporting Wellness, it was good for me to meet Dom and Zoe for the first time too, and chat to them about where they were at with their respective sports.
Both Dom and Zoe spoke at length about how they began their sporting journey’s, the highlights as well as tougher times and of course, about the mental side of their sports. Dom was very open about the stigma of gymnastics for a guy, as it’s mainly seen as a female sport, and how he saw it as a challenge to overcome that. He also spoke at length about his injury problems and how devastating that had been to go through, but that his successful recovery has made him a better sportspeople and person. Dom also spoke at length about the uncertainty of the Olympics due to the Coronavirus, which we now know has been postponed and rescheduled to 2021.
Hearing Zoe speak passionately about her experiences of mental health issues in sport was also incredibly inspiring. She opened up a lot during the interview and it was great to hear such honesty and her talking about the subject without being phased in the slightest. Check out these sportspeople on Instagram @zoe.davison and @domcunn, and we look forward to seeing the interviews!
